Introduction as a WP candidate

I was introduced today by Workers’ Party secretary-general Low Thia Khiang as one of the party’s candidates for the upcoming General Election. I gave a short speech introducing myself. I also answered a question by Channel NewsAsia’s Imeda Saad on how my work experience can contribute to my role as an MP.

  1. i wish you best of luck and i believe your contributions will make a difference to the lives of our fellow singaporeans. you may or may not be contesting in my ward but nevertheless, you have my support.

  2. Best wishes to you, SL, all WP and opposition candidates,

    i want to encourage all of u using Chapter 64 of Laozi:

    in particular
    By being careful at the end as at the beginning
    Failure is averted.

    64. Beginning and End
    That which lies still is easy to hold;
    That which is not yet manifest is easy to forestall;
    That which is brittle (like ice) easily melts;
    That which is minute easily scatters.
    Deal with a thing before it is there;
    Check disorder before it is rife.
    A tree with a full span’s girth begins from a tiny sprout;
    A nine-storied terrace begins with a clod of earth.
    A journey of a thousand li beings at one’s feet.

    He who acts, spoils;
    He who grasps, lets slip.
    Because the Sage does not act, he does not spoil,
    Because he does not grasp, he does not let slip.
    The affairs of men are often spoiled within an ace of completion.
    By being careful at the end as at the beginning
    Failure is averted.

    Therefore the Sage desires to have no desire,
    And values not objects difficult to obtain.
    Learns that which is unlearned,
    And restores what the multitude have lost.
    That he may assist in the course of Nature
    And not presume to interfere.

  3. Overall, the number of expats (non Asians) in the company (that has been in Singapore for 5+ years) i am at is of a significant number and most of them draw a salary of more than 7K a month whereas the Asians have to cram and rent to live with others. These expats can afford rentals of places of more then 3K a month. (This is not even close to my salary).
    Most expats ( whites) are taking the cab everyday to and from work and some even have afforded cars in their time here. Something a Singaporean working in the company will never ever afford to do. Many of these expats are not as competent or anyway close to some Singaporeans in the company.

  4. Hi Gerald,

    I am a 25 years old undergraduate from the National University of Singapore.

    It is to my knowledge that that WP will be contesting for EC GRC this coming elections. However, my family and i have not even heard or seen anybody coming to knock on our doors so far. Ruling Party, including. We are staying inside Sennett Ave and we are not sure if your party even intend to pay us a vist at all. I say that because that area is largely private and is almost difficult to know of its existence unless you lived there. We lived within the Upp East Coast area where there is a substantial amount of landed homes and of which a bulk of them are Singaporeans. I am sure your party would know which area i am talking about. The feel i am getting from my neighbors are that they are wiling to listen to what the Opposition has to say. These people are highly educated, successful, open-mind and understand the importance of an alternative government to be in placed. A failure to reach out to them could proved to be be detrimental.

    It is my belief that the votes are there for the takings, and a lot of people in my area are open for changes. Therefore, we hope your party will take this in mind and cover all grounds.

  5. Hi Junior,

    Thanks for your comment and feedback. We have not been neglecting landed property estates. In fact, we visited Sennett Estate on 8 April. To date, we have visited almost all landed properties in East Coast GRC, including those on Pulau Ubin.

    However our experience with landed properties is that very often doorbells don’t work and residents can’t hear us when we shout out, because of the long driveway. Having said that, I am always cheered when we do get to talk to residents, because I can sense their deep interest in the issues and the fact that they see a need for credible alternative voices in Parliament.

    I’m sorry we missed you when we visited. If you’re free over the next few days, I’ll be glad to drop by your place and meet you and a few of your neighbours. Please send me an email and let me know when is a good time. My email is gerald.giam at gmail . com. Hope to hear from you soon.
