Hi Gerald,
Yes "pragmatism" is the cause of many of our angst.
The controllers in MSM ( and in most spheres as well) also want it known to those whose rice-bowls are under their control, that it is good to "speak out", but it is better still to "speak right".
Call me paranoiac but I think there is a perceivable tightening of the reins.
When I write to the forum now, I don't even get an acknowledgement that the letter has been received. Also not a reply why it has not been published!
We should just build up an alternative but credible voice ourselves but don't give up your daytime job yet!
Cheers,
Dr.H

Hi Doc,

I think the Singapore media (MSM and New Media) has to develop its own way to keep the Govt accountable, yet not become a free-for-all madhouse like in Philippines or Taiwan.

A lot of the seemingly sycophantic behaviour in our MSM has to do with our Singapore culture of fear, pragmatism and lack of conviction to do what is right if it is to one's personal disadvantage. If the MSM does not change for the better, as Sylvia Lim predicted, then the New Media will have to step up to the plate to take its place.

I feel there should be more collaboration between independent writers so that the public's attention can be channelled into one or two credible websites, rather than have to sift through a whole lot of blogs (which most laymen won't bother doing).

Hi Gerald,
Like you, I am extremely disappointed with our MSM.
We expect the media to have some perspective. The issues brought up by PM is collosal in importance to the fabric of our nation.
Such issues in most democracies would have aroused heated but needed debate. Govt's have risen and fallen on such platforms.
But we got a "Pom-pom girl"-like cheerleaders led ably by the MSM.
When the crux comes, who will warn the people/govt of potential danger before we all step off the cliff like lemmings?
Dr.H
